About our contest:
Now in our 9th year, The BBQ on the River
and Fly In returns with a beautiful venue and
fun-filled events for young and old.
We look forward to another contest filled
with tough competition and the aroma of smoked meats
filling the air.
Your BBQ on the River and Fly-In committee is once
again hard at work on the 9th annual BBQ
contest in
Excelsior Springs,
Missouri. This years dates for the
contest will be August 20th and 21st.
We have many exciting activities planned for all
ages to enjoy. These activities include a
performance by the Marching Cobras, live bands,
vendors, kids play area, the Apache Helicopter, beer
garden, fireworks and much more. Contestants and
spectators look forward to bringing their families
to Excelsior Springs for this event.
Last year we had 75 teams competing for the
Grand Championship and this year we are planning on
100 teams. We gave away $8,500 in prize money and
donated over $16,000 to the community. This event
was enjoyed by approximately 6,000 spectators and we
expect that number to grow as well. We received rave
reviews from all that have attended previous years
events.
The BBQ on the River and Fly-In is a nonprofit
organization that raises money annually for the
community. In the past, we have donated money to the
Excelsior
Springs Parks
and Recreation to help build a community park at Powell Lake
in 2009 and a skate park. We have also contributed
to the Excelsior Springs
Historical
Museum, Excelsior
Springs Community Theater, and Excelsior Springs
High School Athletic Department. Last year we
purchased a med bed gator for Excelsior Springs Fire
Department. The med bed has been used in off-road
accidents, school sporting events and at the
festivals held in Excelsior Springs. This year the
Excelsior Springs Police Department has put in a
request to purchase a police gator to enable them to
better assist at accidents, festivals and parades
held in Excelsior Springs. We are very happy to help
our community as it grows.
Along with the police gator, we are also
raising money to purchase a park bench to be placed
by the pond at Century Park. This bench will be in memory of one
of our committee members and friends that was very
active in the community.
Paul Lane
passed away unexpectedly in February and loved the
community park we helped purchase in 2008.
Total Prize Purse for the contest this year is $10,000!!
